उनके शासनकाल में 1965 का भारत पाक युद्ध शुरू हो गया। इससे तीन वर्ष पूर्व चीन का युद्ध भारत हार चुका था। शास्त्रीजी ने अप्रत्याशित रूप से हुए इस युद्ध में नेहरू के मुकाबले राष्ट्र को उत्तम नेतृत्व प्रदान किया और पाकिस्तान को करारी शिकस्त दी। इसकी कल्पना पाकिस्तान ने कभी सपने में भी नहीं की थी।
